About

Los Angeles has more going for it than celeb-spotting and is a fabulous destination for a family friendly holiday.

Universal Studios Hollywood

Take the tour and travel through scenes from a wide range of movies and TV sets, such as the Desperate Housewives Wisteria Lane set and the plane crash from War of the Worlds. See the Bates house and Motel from Psycho, duck as Jaws pops up for a visit, marvel at the special effects displays from an underground earth quake scene and stand in awe at the effects on the Fast and the Furious set.

After the tour, which should not be missed, taking in a few of the shows is also worthwhile. The Waterworld display is fun even for those who have never seen the film; you may get a little wet sitting too close though. The special effects stage is a real eye opener into the behind the scenes goings on in the movie business. There are rides, shops and a variety of entertainment to enjoy so it is easy to fill a full day taking it all in.

Walk down Hollywood Boulevard

Taking a walk down a street might sound a bit boring, but not when that street is Hollywood Boulevard. The pavement itself is a tourist attraction as there are many stars on the area known as the “Walk of Fame”. TV and Movie stars, singers, directors and producers amongst others have been permanently immortalized with their own star as a symbol of their achievements in their field.

Another way the famous leave their permanent mark is at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. The floor is filled with blocks of concrete where a select few celebrities andother personailities are invited to leave their handprints. Included here is Marilyn Monroe, the three main stars of the Harry Potter movies, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, and L.A. Lakers star Kobe Bryant. Madame Tussauds is also located on Hollywood Boulevard and is a fun way to pass a few hours in the city. Lifelike waxworks of the rich, famous or downright weird are all on display.

The Kodak Theatre (which is now known as the Hollywood and Highland Centre) can also be found here. This is the location where the Oscars are held and is instantly recognisable to anyone who follows the awards show. weddings are held here.

When the Oscars are not being presented here the theatre is home to many performances and on the rare occasion

La Brea Tar Pits

Give the kids a little taste of history at the La Brea Tar Pits. Cracks in the earth have allowed the tar to bubble to the surface for several thousand years and have trapped countless animals while doing so. The children will enjoy the George Page museum as it is filled with many fascinating exhibits and the chance to hunt for fossils.

Other family friendly LA activities

The Los Angeles coastline is dotted with many fabulous beaches. Malibu, Manhattan and Long Beach are all very popular. The Santa Monica pier attracts thousands of visitors each day and is a good place to spend time with the children. Disneyland in Anaheim is one of the more popular tourist attractions and is fun for both adults and children alike. The chance to meet Mickey Mouse or a favourite Disney Princess brings children here year after year.

The Farmers Market is a great place to meet people, and maybe bump into a celebrity or two. There is a wide variety of shops and stalls selling everything from hot sauce to fresh produce. There is always something tasty cooking in the international food hall and is a great place to stop for a bite to eat.

For those who fancy a little shopping and maybe pick up the odd designer treat, Rodeo Drive is the place to be. Window shopping is also allowed for those whose budget won’t stretch that far.

For those that love theme parks why not try out the first ever American theme park? Knotts Berry Farm is something fun for kids of all ages. It has its own Ghost Town, saloon shows and  blacksmith demonstrations too. There are many fun rides and a chance to buy many Native American crafts. Six Flags Theme Park is another great activity for kids.

Although this is perhaps aimed at older children it is still great fun for everyone. There are a wide variety of rides including adrenaline filled fast moving speedsters and the more sedate log flume rides. Whatever your preference you are sure to have fun.
